Let´s start with some travel tips.

Since Venice is built on water, it can be quite tricky to move around. There are no cars, and the entire city was designed to be explored by boat.

The first thing you have to bear in mind is how you want to arrive. If you come from abroad, you will land on the Marco Polo airport. From there you have to take a water taxi to Venice, preferrable San Marco. This will cost you around 100 Euro, but you can share it with other customers. Do that if you arrive with a group of people or try to find some other people who will face the same challenge.

Another possibility is to arrive by car. There is a carpark, the tronchetto. From there you can take a Vaporetto towards your destination.

Supertip: Most people take the Vaporetto along the Grand Canal towards San Marco. Don´t do that. Since every tourist will do this along with all the luggage they bring, the Vaporetto will be crowded like hell. And you will be there amidst the crowd with all yor travel luggage. You will not enjoy the pleasure of hopping on a densely crowded vaporetto with all yor belongings, trust me.

Instead, head the other side round towards Zattere. You will also reach Piazza San Marco on that route, and you will avoid the many other tourists. All locals do that, unless they need to go to a place in the city. If you have your Hotel in the Dorsoduro area, you are happy man. If your hotel is around San Marco, likewise. If you have chosen another place, you have to take the route along Grand Canal and hop the densley crowded Vaporetto.

I will not tell you that you should avoid the Grand Canal at all. On the contrary. Take a roundtrip with a Vaporetto once you have arrived and stored all your luggage in your Hotel and enjoy the stunning views. But don´t do that with all your bulky luggage.

Supertip 2: Everyone uses his smartphone nowadays and maps to find his destination. In Venice with its small streets the gps does not always work perfectly, and you might end in a canal. My tip is to get a good old analogue map of the city in the tourist information. All the Hotels will provide you with one. Be smart, take it and use it to your advantage. You are welcome.
